The Academy Awards are presented every year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. They are also known as “the Oscars.”
Since “Academy Awards” and “Oscars” are both trademarked, AP Style holds that they should be capitalized when appearing in your text. But when “the academy” and “the awards” stand alone, they should be lowercase. For example,
- Did you watch the Academy Awards last night?
- I watch the Oscars every single year.
-but-
- This year, the academy was very undecided to whom to give the award.
- This year, the awards will air at 8:00 p.m. EST.
