AP Style Assassin, Killer, Murderer

AP Style holds that an “assassin” is one who kills a politically important or prominent person.

A “killer” is anyone who kills with a motive of any kind.

A “murderer” is one who is convicted of murder in a court of law. Example of preferred use,

  • Greg Smith was convicted of second-degree murder.
