AP Style Man, Mankind

AP Style holds that either may be used when both men and women are involved and no other term is convenient. In these cases, do not use duplicate phrases such as “a man or a woman” or “mankind and womankind.”

Frequently the best choice is a substitute such as “humanity,” “a person,” or “an individual.”
